Proving that there's much more to his game than just a lot of talk, Mike "The Mouth" Matusow defeated one of the most impressive final tables ever assembled to claim his third career World Series of Poker bracelet.
Matusow, who has long had a reputation as one of the game's most outspoken and colorful personalities, bested a final table that included WSOP bracelet winners Barry Greenstein, Tom Schneider, Jeffrey Lisandro, and Team Full Tilt member Erick Lindgren, who won his first bracelet last week.
Speaking after the tournament, Matusow who has long claimed to be the unluckiest player in the game, says he owes today's victory to the power of positive thinking and the fact that he simply had the patience to out-last second-place finisher Jeffrey Lisandro. Matusow started the more than 90-minute heads-up battle for the bracelet by doubling up on Lisandro during the very first hand of heads-up play. From there, Matusow went on a brief run, winning five hands in a row before Lisandro doubled up to close the gap.
After trading pots for more than an hour, Matusow finally claimed the victory when he pushed all-in with Q-8-7-4-3 and Lisandro called. After drawing one card, Lisandro turned over Q-9-6-5-3, giving Matusow the win and the nearly $538,000 first-place prize. Full Tilt Poker pro David Benyamine pocketed nearly $59,000 for his seventh-place finish, while Lindgren took home more than $156,000 for fourth.
"Mike Matusow has long been considered one of the best all-around tournament players in the game," said fellow Team Full Tilt member Howard Lederer. "Winning his third bracelet in his third different poker discipline validates that claim further."
Matusow's victory is the fourth team bracelet for Full Tilt Poker during the 2008 WSOP, following victories by Nenad Medic in Event #1, David Singer in Event #3, and Erick Lindgren in Event #4. Combined, the more than 100 pros who represent the popular online poker site have earned nearly $4.8 million in prize money through the first 18 events of this year's WSOP and own a combined 85 bracelets.
